Prelude 2016 CrossFit Open
It’s that time of the year. The CrossFit Open is upon us, and now we have an awesome opportunity to help each other reach our goals. Over the next five weeks, we will be holding a friendly team competition and team building event. Nothing really special required from you all. All you have to do is come to the gym. . .and we know how much you love coming to the gym :-).
It’s going to be a blast. Let’s get ready to have fun, build our community, and get better. The rules of the game, FAQ section, and your team Captains are below.
Rules of the Game:
1. Teams have been chosen at random.
2. Each team is assigned a team captain from the Coach Training Program.
3. The workouts will be scheduled for Saturday, with a make up on Monday. It is preferrable that you do the workout on Saturday, and make it up on Monday if necessary. You do not have to do the WOD as a team, although it is preferable to have your team members do it together.
4. Team members earn points by accumulating repetitions for their team regardless of whether the athlete does Rx or scale. For example, if Julie does the workout Rx, and accumulates 180 reps, and Marna does the workout scaled and accumulates 200 reps, Marna earns more points for her team. The goal is to push yourself within your ow individual training threshold. This is notwithstanding scoring for purposes of the CrossFit Headquarters Leaderboard.
5. The main mission is to simply get in the gym, have fun, kick butt, and make yourself better.
Scoring:
10 points per team member for regular class attendance, or Extra Credit Homework. However, a team member cannot accumulate points for extra credit and class attendance on the same day (limited to 10 points total per day from this category). The score for your Extra Credit Homework should be posted in the comment section on the Facebook page.
1 point for every team member who completes a given CrossFit Open workout.
3 points for every athlete on the team who scores in the top 3 ladies and top 3 men.
10 points to the team that wins the Spirit of the Open for the respective week.
Scoring closes at 8 pm the Friday after the Open workout is announced.
Bobby Hand aka “Mr. Magic Hands”: The Commissioner
Let’s say, hypothetically speaking of course, he wasn’t a very good Physical Therapist. And let’s say, hypothetically speaking, he wasn’t a good CrossFit athlete. . . .Can anyone deny the fact this guy has some of the best looking hair on the planet? Of course you can’t!!! Ryan Gosling once stopped him on the streets of Philly, and merely said “My God!” Bobby is the Commissioner of the Prelude Open. He once broke a PT patient’s legs because the guy said his finger hurt. Imagine what he will do to athletes who don’t squat below parallel. Think Roger Goodell, only better looking, with the mind of The Joker.
Jenna Kostiuk aka “Da Intern”: The Media Director
The baby of the gym, Jenna used to be a cheerleader, spirit fingers, jazz hands and all. She’s a self proclaimed nerd who never stays out past 9, beats her classmates who don’t study, and she wants to own a Pug farm one day. Her father is a retired Navy officer who once snuck her on a submarine dressed as a Navy SEAL. She also managed to launch a nuclear warhead in the process, thinking she could log onto her Facebook account.

Lyn Voelker aka “The Quiet Storm”: Head Judge
She joined a biker gang at the age of 18 because she wanted to see the world. She made her way to the top by stuffing the head of the leader in a toilet in the men’s bathroom in a dive bar in the middle of Wyoming. As a CIA agent, she was known by the code name of “The Piercer,” and practically wrote the book on enhanced interrogation methods that make waterboarding look like a kids amusement park. Her tattoos are actually carved out pieces of skin claimed from her enemies. If she says no rep. . . .The fool is the one who argues. The wise man is the one who apologizes and starts again from zero.
Bernadette Hutchinson aka “Smiley”: Team Quad Squad Captain
She’s quiet until she gets fired up. She likes a good class of wine chased by five shots of Moonshine soaked in rusty nails. She once got a case of the ass at Whole Foods because they were out of almond butter, went into “Hulk Smash” mode, and tore the place apart (little known fact. . .She used to Roller Derby). She was a Hippster before being a Hippster was hip. She is also known to wear a random Viking hat during her wedding ceremony. When asked about her loyalty to Jenee, she merely said. . .”All’s fair in WODs and War, and today is a good day for her to die.”

Bridget aka “The Bad Ass Naturopath”: Team On Fleek Captain
Doc Bridget knows a thing or two about keeping people healthy. A mild mannered Naturopathic doctor, she knows the best herbs to get you back on your feet (which types of “herbs” is still up for debate and can’t be discussed in an open forum. The DEA is still hot on her heels). She once climb Mt Rainer in board shorts just to be more connected with the elements. She told her yoga instructor to shut the hell up because she was trying to get in touch with her inner self. When asked about her oath to do no harm, she said “I’m going to harm those other teams alright. . .Team On Fleek means eat the meek!!!”
Jess Brady aka “Mighty Mouth”: Team Clean N’ Snatch Captain
Truly the “Mouth of the South,” you can guarantee if any team captain will talk $hit it will be Jess. What else can you do when you are at eye level with everyone’s navel. She’s an ATC, which everyone thought meant Ass to Couch (apparently it means Athletic Trainer Certified). As an athletic trainer for high school sports teams, she once hid her identify by dressing as a teenage boy to beat the crap out of one of them for stepping on her shoes. To this day, kids fear her as the second coming of Chuckie. She has no reservation about the fact her team will kick, bite, and fight to win it all.

Jenee aka “Ms. Nice Guy”: Team Snatch Me If You Can Captain
She smiles. She laughs. She jokes. That is until you start the clock. She’s definitely a social worker who puts in work. It is an urban legend that there was a combative patient in the ER, the nurses wanted to call security, Jenee simply said hold my coffee and watch me Snatch the hell outta him. Don’t be fooled by her frequent use of the word “Ya’ll,” it’s a smoke screen to make you let your guard down. And truth of the matter. . . she salivates at the opportunity to crush her battle buddy Bernadette’s team.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the CrossFit Open?
The Open is a five-week, five-workout competition held in the winter in CrossFit affiliates and garage gyms around the world. Workouts are released online each Thursday. This year, the first workout was announced on February 25th, and the last will be on March 24th. You can compete against other CrossFit gym members worldwide to see where you rank by registering on the CrossFit Games website, or you can have a friendly team and community event in your own gym. In total, you complete five workouts over the course of five weeks.
Do I have to do this?
No we can’t force you to. . . .but. . . .It’s going to be fun. So do it!!!! Additionally, the Open WODs will be the standard workouts on Saturday and Monday, so you might as well come to class on those days. If you do the workout on Saturday, we will have a different workout for you to do on Monday. You also earn points for just coming to class.
I don’t think I am good enough, and will make my team lose.
Don’t worry about that. The scoring system is designed so that everyone can contribute to the team. Points are given relative to your own individual effort. In fact, you earn more points by showing community spirit and showing up for class than you do by doing an Open WOD, or ending up at the top of the leaderboard. And ultimately, our Prelude community is the winner.
Will the workouts be hard?
Not any harder than what we already do in class. And everything will be scaled. There will be the scales provided by CrossFit for the workouts, but we will also use our own scale. The scale we use will be the same as the scaling system we currently use in the gym. The goal is to provide you with a benchmark from which you can gauge your progress later on down the road. The other secret is that you have been doing past Open workouts in class from time to time. You just didn’t know it!!!!
What if I can’t make it on Monday or Saturday are the Open workouts everyday?
Doing the workouts outside of Monday and Saturday will be by extreme exception only. Coordinate with us in advance if you can’t make it, and we will try to adjust. Tuesday through Friday we will have regular workouts. As stated in the scoring section, you still earn points for your team by doing regular class workouts, and extra credit homework.
How do I sign up for a time slot on Saturday?
You can sign up in Wodify for the classes on Saturday.Class times are 8am, 9am, 10am, and 11am. To make this a fun time, try to register for a class that has members in it. Additionally, the classes are open enrollment, and don’t count against your membership. The classes are capped at 16.
What if I’m still in Preschool or doing Personal Training, can I still be on a team?
Yup. Both programs allow you to earn points for your team to the same extent as regular classes
Do I have to be registered for the CrossFit Open to participate?
Nope, you sure don’t. But if you would like to, you can register for the CrossFit Open by clicking HERE.
What if I did sign up for the CrossFit Open?
If you signed up for the CrossFit Open, you will be scored according to the movement standards put out by CrossFit HQ. This will be different than our in house scaling options, and is necessary for your score to be validated.
What happens at the end of the 6 weeks?
Well technically, the Open is only 5 weeks long. The 6th weekend we plan on having a workout in the park and bar-b-que to celebrate and hand out awards. So save Saturday, April 2, 2016 as a date to remember.
What team am I on?
Your team captain will contact you. Additionally, the teams can be found by clicking HERE. If you don’t see your name on any of the lists, please send us an email or Facebook to let us know. Our eyes glaze over sometimes. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to email or send a Facebook message.
Do I have to do my Open workout the same time as my team?
Nope. Although it is encouraged, it is not mandatory. But we are not held responsible for you being kidnapped and tied to a pole.
At the end of the day, this is all about building our community. Let’s have fun and work hard together towards “The Beginning of Something Better”
