Patrick Henry only really cared about Church Hill. If the British signed the treaty he proposed, making The Hill it’s own independent country, the war would have been lost.
I’ve lived on Church Hill for almost six years now. And if there is one thing I have learned is that Church Hill folks really don’t like to leave Church Hill for anything. And when I say Church Hill I also mean Fulton, Union Hill, and Shockoe since we have essentially annexed those areas and they are more or less territories of the Church Hill empire. When I was considering where I wanted to open my gym, it was a easy decision to find a place on The Hill. Want food? The decision is the Hill Cafe, Union Market, Urban Farmhouse, The Roosevelt, Dutch and Company, Anthony’s, or 23rd and Main (yes I know where it is but it’s close enough). Need a sweet treat or baked good? Pop on over to Proper Pie, WPA, or Sub Rosa. Hair stylist? Seven Hills is the place to go (although for some reason Elizabeth and Jay won’t shine my bald head, but I won’t hold it against them). Want to buy or sell a house? Ask Matt Jarreau or “Call Tommy” Waterworth. Need news? Check out Church Hill People’s News. How about a good grocery store. . .well, I’ll just leave that alone.
The point is this. “Buy local” means more than buying organic goods from a Virginia farmer. It means supporting local businesses, which in turn helps our immediate local economy grow. Invest in your community, and it will pay dividends in return. Live, Eat, Sleep, and Shop Church Hill.
