Katie

Coach

I am excited to be part of the Prelude family! I have found this gym after traversing both coasts for the last 6 years. I had always been sporty as a kid doing swimming and gymnastics, but found my way into regular gyms pretty early on. I’d flip through my subscriptions of Oxygen magazine wishing I could look like these ladies. I spent hours on forums about nutrition, and killing 3×10 sets day after day because that’s what my magazine assured me would get me lean. I’d admire the fit people in the magazines, get serious for a few weeks, then taper off from boredom, lack of clear goals, and dwindled enthusiasm.

When I first moved to the Richmond in 2010, I found CrossFit by chance and started, quite literally, in a garage which later grew into CrossFit Midlo. I remember some of my first workouts, overhead lunging down a driveway, learning to kip on homemade pull-up bars and hearing about this thing called “The Open” The novelty of the movements and the varied workouts at high intensity, and the light competitiveness suited my personality perfectly. It’s been over 6 years now and I’m still not bored.

I went to my first CrossFit certification pretty soon after starting CrossFit, and since 2011 have had the privilege of coaching in some phenomenal gyms. Finding a CrossFit home is so important for me to better myself as an athlete and coach. I’ve found the people in the gym are just as, and often more, important than the workout in making me a better, happier person. I’m a naturopathic doctor and acupuncturist by profession, and CrossFit reflects much of my beliefs about health and happiness-there is no one size fits all, but nutrition, movement, and community are part of our foundation for longevity.

I haven’t looked at a fitness magazine for years. I define strength and beauty and how to achieve it completely differently than back then. I have clearer goals, a better relationships with food, and have way, way more fun in the gym.
