We are a month away from another year. The New Year represents an excellent time for us to not only reflect on what happened in the previous year, but also to establish new goals. For the vast majority of us, if we were to write down a list of the resolutions we made last year, how many would be checked off, and how many are still left for us to accomplish? The trick to it all, is to have an understanding that maybe you were focusing on the wrong goals, or goals that didn’t fit in your current life structure.

Something that can help you prepare better for the New Year is for you to uncomplicated your life. This gives you a chance to spend more time with the people you care for, and also time to do more of the things you love. Getting rid of the clutter, leaves you with the things that give you value.

Here are five tips to help keep you on track:

1. Stop dwelling on things that you wanted to, or thought should happen. In order for you to start fresh in the New Year, you have to eliminate thoughts of what you didn’t accomplish previously. This doesn’t mean you have to forget them, but what you should do instead is evaluate the “why’ behind why you didn’t accomplish something, analyze it, and take affirmative steps to make it not happen again. Life is full of ups and downs, but it is the lessons we learn that will enable us to become better versions of ourselves.

2. Stop making wishes, and make decisions. Often, in our lives, we wish we had done something, but, there is little action taken on our parts to make those wishes become a reality. Children wish for things, and parents provide. As adults, we don’t have that luxury. Our wishes, our hopes, our dreams, must be accompanied by action on our part. Without action, our wishes remain. . . well. . . wishes.

3. Start making the moves you want to make. This goes along with making decisions and taking action. If you want to pursue a new job, start taking steps to get your dream job or, better yet, start your own business. If you want to buy a house, what is your actionable plan to start saving, or building your perfect home. The point is, making a decision, taking action, and making moves to bring it all into being, go hand in hand.

4. Look for the bright side behind everything. There is almost no situation you will come across that is insurmountable. An impenetrable barrier is usually one that you have made so in your head. Take each struggle, each test in life, as a chance to rebuild a better you. Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently, it is a temporary obstacle in your journey to greatness.

5. Surround yourself with positive people. Strategically target those individuals who make you happy. This may or may not be the people you surround yourself with currently. Don’t go out to drinks with a friend who is always a downer, this adds little value to your life. Surround yourself with the people you enjoy being around, that bring you happiness, and that will help you in the pursuit of your goals. These are the ones who will make you feel more alive, and push you towards your goals.
